Kyo
Chapter 10: Pain
When I ask myself why I love Eniwa, I couldn’t answer it. Behind every love, there’s a story and reason behind it. As for me, there are no reasons behind it but only a story. I love him. I just do. But sometimes, I wish I have a reason.
It’s been only suddenly when he begins to act strange. He leaves school late and he doesn’t talk to me anymore---he acts like a stranger around me! I don’t understand him at all. Also, he begins to look very pale as well. He looks like he doesn’t get enough sleep and there are bags under his eyes from time to time. He coughs a lot now and his head is always hurting---even though he denies it, he winch every time he touches the side of his head. He’s not telling me something.
Pain erupts in Eniwa’s head as he grips it hard on the side of his head. Beside him was Kyo, whose scare and frighten, just watching in him pain. She had seen him in pain many times, but each day, it gets scarier and scarier. It’s almost unbearable to look.
“Hey, you alright?” she asks him, trying to comfort him a little.
“I’m fine.” He answers.
“Eniwa, you’re sweating! Do you have a fever?!” she asks him, swiping the sweat from him.
“I’m fine.” He forces the words to come out. “Can you hug me Masaki?” he asks faintly. He was panting. “I’m cold.”
“Eniwa?” Kyo pulls him into her arms. “You’re burning!”
“Let me sleep on your shoulder, would you?” He whispers, “Just for a little while.”
“Okay.” She nods.
I don’t know what’s happening. Eniwa, are you not going to tell me? She asks herself. Everyday when I see you suffer, I wish I know how you feel. I worried about you, don’t you know?
“You mean he’s suffering head pain?” Takumi asks Kyo.
She nods. She was sitting on her bed, hugging her pillow like a teddy bear. Her eyes droop and a frown was across her lips. She had been complaining about Eniwa to Takumi that evening in her room. “He won’t tell me anything. All he says is that he’s okay and he’ll be fine. I don’t know. I’m worried about him.” she mutters. “Everyday it gets worse!”
“So, you tried asking and didn’t find out anything. Have you checked the nurse’s office? I’m sure he’s been there a few times if he’s been in pain.” He asks.
“I did, but the nurse that said that the only thing he came for was some migraine pills, nothing else.” She answers.
“So, the nurse knows nothing too.” He frowns. He tries to think. “The only thing we could do is ask Eniwa to tell what’s going on. That’s the easiest way!”
“I asked him many times,” she answers in a pouting face, “but he won’t tell me anything. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want to tell me! I don’t understand at all!” she exclaims in annoyance.
“Why don’t you ask him again? It won’t hurt to try again.”
“Maybe I should.” She whispers. “Tomorrow, maybe.”
Alone in his room, Eniwa begins cough. Coughing, blood suddenly appears from his mouth. His hand quickly drench in his rose color blood. It drips onto the floor, making a small puddle on the ground.
“Kyo Sir!” a voice from behind his door calls to him. “Are you feeling ill?” It sounded worry.
“I’m fine!” Eniwa answers in return. “Don’t worry!”
The pain. It’s worse every day. Blood eh? Is it that bad already?
He returns back to his bed and tries to close his eyes. The image of Kyo appears in his mind. The smiles that Kyo sends, the presence of her, her touch, everything about her---were so far away. “Masaki…” Eniwa whispers her name in the darkness of his room. Just speaking her name, he could feel how painful it is. Slowly, unexpected tears flow from his eyes. Darkness of fear crawls inside him. “Masaki.” He whispers her name once more.
“He’s not here!” Kyo angrily slams her hand onto her desk the next morning. She had just found out that Eniwa wasn’t at school or won’t be coming anytime soon. That morning, she was so excitement to see him too! “I don’t get it! Where the hell is he?!”
“Kyo Masaki?” the sound of Mina’s voice appears in the silent classroom. She was standing by the doorway. “I have something to tell you.” She mutters as she walks from the classroom and towards an empty hall. Kyo follows her.
“What is it?” she asks, trying to sound as if she’s not angry or anything.
“It’s about Kyo-kun.” Mina mutters.
“What?!” Kyo’s heart jumps, “What about him?” she asks.
“He’s sick.” Mina answers.
“He’s sick? Yeah, I know that!” Kyo answers. “Tell me where he is!” she demands.
“He’s at the hospital.” Mina answers.
“The hospital? How come? Why?” she asks.
“Like I say, he’s sick---very sick actually.” She answers.
“How do you know that?” Kyo asks. “Eniwa---how is he? Is he okay?”
“Seems like you’re clueless about his illness.” Mina sighs. “I knew that something like this would happen.”
“What?!” Kyo snaps. “I don’t understand what you’re saying at all! Tell me what’s wrong with Eniwa!”
“He’s dying.”
“Eh?”
“Kyo-kun is dying.” Mina answers. “He’s dying, Masaki-san. Everyday that passes by, he’s dying. His life is gradually living by the thread of tomorrow.”
“You’re lying.” Kyo shakes her head. “You’re lying.”
“Believe what you want.” Mina sighs, “But this is the address to the hospital and room. I hope that you come and see him. He’s been asking for you.”
“Go away.” Kyo falls on her knees. This is not true! Eniwa is not sick! He’s not dying! This is so sudden! Why didn’t he tell me anything?! I was so—mean to him too! Eniwa. What the hell is happening to you!
“Sis!” Takumi and Akira rushes into the nurse’s office as they heard about Kyo’s breakdown. “What happen?!”
Tears roll from Kyo’s eyes. “Eniwa is sick.” She mutters.
“What?”
“He’s sick.”
“Sis/Kyo-chan?”
“He’s dying!” she cries. “He’s dying!”
“You mean Eniwa?”
“Eniwa is dying!” Kyo cries. “He’s dying!”
“Sis…” Takumi frowns. He had never seen her cried like this before. Kyo has always been a strong girl with a positive attitude. Now she’s crying and he doesn’t know what to do to help her. Walking over to her, he held her in his arms. “I’m sorry.” He whispers.
“Takumi!” she cries, “What could I do? What should I do! I don’t want him to leave.”
“I also don’t want him to leave Sis.” Takumi answers.
“I don’t want him to leave!” she cries. “Please, someone help him! Please!”
On the ground, there was a small piece of paper. Looking at it for a second, Akira picks it up. Opening it, she reads the hospital name and the room number. She quickly looks at Takumi and Kyo. “This must be where Eniwa is at.” She mutters. “Are you going to visit him?” she asks.
Kyo didn’t say anything. She continues to cry in Takumi’s arms.
Dark and alone in the room, the door finally opens and walks in Mina, who has some flowers in her hands. As she walks over to him, she places them in the empty vase that has already been filled with water. She sits on the chair in front of his bed.
“I told her.” She whispers at him, “that you’re dying. She was devastated.”
“You told Masaki?” Eniwa mumbles.
“She was crying.” Mina answers. “Seems like you hide it from her well. She has no clue that you’re sick.”
“Why did you tell her?” Eniwa frowns. “Now, she’ll be sad and she’ll cry.”
“About what you?!” Mina exclaims. “You’re sad and you’ll cry too! Don’t you think about yourself? You’re dying for goodness’s sake!”
“It’s just---my fate.” He answers.
“Stupid!” Mina begins to cry. “If only you’re not stubborn! We could have helped you! Now, it’s too late! You’re dying Kyo-kun! Why are you not worried! Are you that happy to die?!”
“I have seen death before.” Eniwa answers.
“I don’t care!” she answers, shaking her head. Quickly she held onto his hands. “I want you to live! Please, I want you to live! Kyo-kun, I love you! I want you to live! Please live!”
“I want to live to.” he weakly mumbles, “And I want to make her happy.”
“Then live for her!” Mina mutters. “Live for the girl you love!”
“But…I don’t know how long I have left.” He frowns. “I wish I could have done something about it. I hate it---knowing that I’ll die like this.” Tears slightly roll from his eyes. “If only I could get one wish.”
“Kyo-kun…”
Standing outside of the hospital was Kyo. She had been standing there for some times now, asking herself is she’s going to enter and see Eniwa. She had told herself a few times that Mina was lying, but knowing how much pain Eniwa has been through the past few days, she couldn’t help but believe her. Her eyes were red from crying too much and her throat had dried out. Eniwa…
She manages to force herself to enter into the hospital. Everyone in there was either visitors, workers, or the patients that are being treated. Passing by a small boy, pain erupts in her chest. Every one that she passes by gave her the image of Eniwa as them. Panting, she enters into the elevator and presses the level: 3.
Remaining in silence to herself, her heart was beating. Every second that passes by, her heart gets tenser and beats faster. Every time a level passes, her body begins to weaken and her knees begin to hurt. Her mind begins to spin and she begins to feel weak. Eniwa, I’m scare---to see you. I’m scare that what Mina say might be true. Eniwa. I’m scare. Why are you not here?
Stepping out of the elevator finally, Kyo slowly approaches the name 310. While she was walking, she had been telling herself that whatever happens, she must remain calm. It wasn’t until the door from 310 opens and walks out Mina. She was crying. Her face was bright red and when she saw Kyo, she frowns.
“He’s waiting for you.” Mina mutters at Kyo.
Standing before the door, Kyo went motionless. Beyond this door is the person I love. Beyond this door is the person who’s dying. Beyond this door, two fates separate. Beyond this door, there’s a person…waiting just for me. Beyond this door…
To be continue…
